DYHA Beginner Hockey program is designed to teach new players the basic skills of hockey. Beginner hockey starts with 4 weeks (2 per week) of free learn to skate sessions from the Decatur Civic Center. The instructors of the Civic Center’s learn to skate are from the Decatur Blaze junior hockey team. Only helmets, skates, and gloves are required for the learn to skate sessions.

Once players are confident in their skating skills, they will transition to DYHA Beginner hockey. This will require full sets of protective gear and a hockey stick. Players will learn basic hockey skills including but not limited to: Skating, Stopping, Agility, Puck Handling, and Basic Game Play.

These are the necessary skills to move on to the next levels within DYHA. Players will be evaluated throughout the season and placed into the proper skill levels as their skills progress.
